The matrix Standard in Social Prescribing

Setting the Standard for Person-Centred Social Prescribing

The matrix Standard is the Department for Education’s recognised quality framework for organisations delivering Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG). In the social prescribing sector, the matrix Standard is a hallmark of quality, supporting NHS, primary care, voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations, and local authorities to deliver high-quality, person-centred IAG that empowers individuals to improve their health, wellbeing, and community connections.

Why the matrix Standard Matters for Social Prescribing

  • Person-Centred Support: The matrix Standard ensures that IAG is tailored to the unique needs, priorities, and motivations of each participant. Social prescribing Link Workers, community connectors, and navigators co-produce personalised care and support plans, helping people access local, non-clinical support and services.
  • Equity, Diversity & Inclusion: Accredited organisations demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that all participants—regardless of background, health status, or circumstance—can access support and achieve positive outcomes. Services are adapted to overcome barriers such as language, accessibility, and social isolation.
  • Wellbeing and Safeguarding: The Standard requires robust safeguarding and wellbeing policies, recognising the complex needs of participants and the importance of staff and volunteer wellbeing. Organisations must ensure safe, supportive environments and effective safeguarding practices.
  • Collaboration & Community Links: The matrix Standard supports strong partnerships with primary care networks, community groups, local authorities, and specialist support organisations, ensuring participants are connected to the right support at the right time.
  • Continuous Improvement: Providers are encouraged to regularly review and enhance their IAG provision, using evidence, feedback, and outcome data to drive ongoing quality improvement and ensure services remain participant-focused.

How the matrix Standard Benefits Social Prescribing Providers

  • Recognition & Assurance: Accreditation demonstrates a commitment to excellence and inclusion, helping providers meet statutory requirements and stand out in the sector.
  • Quality Assurance: The Standard provides a rigorous framework for evaluating and improving IAG services, ensuring participants receive the support they need to thrive.
  • Impact Measurement: Accredited providers can clearly demonstrate the difference their IAG makes—tracking outcomes such as improved wellbeing, reduced isolation, increased community engagement, and reduced demand on clinical services.
