Setting a benchmark for quality through matrix Standard accreditation

Babington Business College Limited has successfully met the matrix Standard during its January 2026 accreditation review. As a leading provider of professional service apprenticeships, Babington is driven by its core purpose: “Developing Better Futures.”

The Opportunity: Refocusing on Our Core Strengths

In 2023, Babington entered a new phase of its journey following a change in leadership, creating an opportunity to refocus the organisation on its core strengths. While Babington has long been established within the apprenticeship market, the business had diversified into a broader range of provision over time.

This period marked a deliberate return to what Babington has always been known for – delivering high-quality professional service apprenticeships. As a long-standing specialist in this sector, the organisation refocused its strategy to build on its expertise, reputation and proven delivery model.

As part of this strategic reset, Babington made clear decisions to exit non-core markets, including traineeships and skills bootcamps, and streamlined its curriculum by reducing the number of apprenticeship standards offered. This enabled greater consistency, stronger specialism, and an enhanced focus on quality across the learner and employer experience.

Combined with a relentless focus on quality, compliance, and operational efficiency, these changes resulted in a significant improvement in performance, with achievement rates increasing from 48.7% to 62.7%.

How Babington Delivered This

Babington’s improved performance was driven by a clear and consistent operating model focused on quality and learner success:

  • A strong commitment to “Right Learner, Right Level, Right Programme” ensuring appropriate enrolment decisions.
  • A well-established quality cycle linking SAR, CIP, and regular performance reviews.
  • Effective use of data and Power BI dashboards to monitor performance and intervene early.
  •  High levels of collaboration across teams, creating a seamless and consistent learner journey.

Impact and Recognition Through the matrix Standard

The matrix Standard assessment provided independent validation of Babington’s approach, confirming the strength and consistency of its Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) services. The assessment evidenced:

  • 97% of learners progressing into employment or remaining in work within six months of completion.
  • 95% of learners reporting a positive impact on their development.
  • Strong employer feedback highlighting professionalism, responsiveness, and quality of delivery.
  • A well-connected and clearly understood learner journey across all teams.

Benefits of matrix Standard Accreditation

matrix Standard accreditation has provided Babington with:

  • Independent validation of a high-quality and mature IAG framework.
  • Increased credibility and confidence with employers, particularly levy-paying organisations.
  • A recognised national benchmark supporting bids, tenders and partnerships.
  • Stronger ability to evidence impact and return on investment.

Looking Forward

Babington will continue to build on this strong foundation, further strengthening its position as the provider of choice for professional service apprenticeships. With a clear focus on quality, impact, and continuous improvement, the organisation remains committed to delivering exceptional outcomes for learners and employers while continuing to develop better futures.

matrix Standard is the Department for Education’s (DfE) standard for ensuring the delivery of high-quality information, advice and guidance (IAG)
