2009 Winners

Walsall College, Student Services

Walsall College is a medium sized FE College.

The College have worked with the Standard for many years having their first assessment in 2003.  However through their on going review of their services they recognised that take up of their services were inconsistent across the College.  Having identified this, they developed ‘partnership agreements’ with their schools/faculties which have clear KPI's and outcomes for the learners.  This was implemented and has been a way of both the school and student services to be accountable for the delivery of careers education and guidance.  Each agreement is negotiated and tailored to the needs of each school, but each area is mapped to the matrix Standard and the Young People’s IAG standards.

Since using this approach they have found that retention and achievement rates have improved and that tutorial staff have used the sessions arranged and delivered by the team not only as information/advice for learners but as staff development for themselves.  They feel that the Standard has brought standardisation of delivery across the College making all staff/schools aware of the service available, and also enabling them to more effectively review and plan provision.

For the integral use of the matrix Standard, a matrix Excellence Award is awarded to Walsall College Student Services.
